Benjamin Netanyahu will be sent into opposition after 12 years in office as Naftali Bennett was sworn in as Israel’s new prime minister on Sunday. After winning a confidence vote with the narrowest of margins, his victory ends a 12-year grip on power by former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the country’s longest-serving leader.

Naftali Bennett who was a longtime Netanyahu ally turned adversary, assumed the role of prime minister. Netanyahu will continue as leader of the Likud party and is now the opposition leader.

Israel’s parliament, known as the Knesset, voted on the new government on Sunday, with politicians in the 120-member assembly voting by a 60-59 margin in favor of the new administration.

Regarding thins, British PM Boris Johnson tweeted on Sunday that “it is an exciting time for the united kingdom and Israel to continue working together to advance peace and prosperity for all”.

US President Joe Biden said he’s looking forward to working with Israel’s new Prime Minister Naftali Bennett. The congratulations from the White House came shortly after a landmark choose the Israeli legislature on Sunday.

“I anticipate working with Prime Minister Bennett to strengthen all aspects of the close and enduring relationship between our two nations,” Biden told his message.

The new Israeli PM Bennett is a former settler leader who opposes Palestinian statehood and believes the Jewish state should annex more land in the occupied West Bank. As for the nuclear deal, Bennett said on Sunday that renewing it had been a ‘mistake.’
