The newly appointed home secretary Sajid Javid has promised to “do right” by the Windrush generation, as revealed in a statement yesterday.
His predecessor Amber Rudd resigned on Sunday – the pressure seemingly became too much to handle – and Javid has stepped up to the plate to address the Windrush crisis after being granted the position.
In his empowering and motivational speech, the forward-thinking Javid said he would do “whatever it takes” to resolve the mistakes that have led to this unsavoury scandal.
The freshly employed home secretary provides a beacon of hope to the disgruntled community, as he vowed that he would make the effort to implement changes that would shift the government’s broader immigration policy.
He commented that he wanted to put his own “stamp” on the department. As a second-generation immigrant he wants to make a push towards a more “humane” system.
Javid told MPs: “Of course it’s not just about personnel change, it’s also about action and that’s exactly what you’ll be seeing from my department.”
These are very positive words from the first ever BAME home secretary, and only time will tell whether progress can be made. The hopes – and stakes – are high!
