The former US former First Lady is speaking at the O2 Arena, With An Audience Of 20,000. She was welcomed on stage at the event on Sunday night, part of an international book tour with a standing ovation and screams.
Michelle Obama was in London to promote her best-selling autobiography “Becoming.” After her sell-out visit to London in December, Michelle Obama is back in the capital this weekend and at a much bigger venue.
She charmed thousands of Britons, telling anecdotes about meeting the “wonderfully warm and funny” Queen Elizabeth and praising London’s diversity at an event in the capital.
Michelle Obama called on those who were unhappy with the Trump White House to “roll up your sleeves”. Asked by the US television host Stephen Colbert how she liked her reception, she said it gave her hope in difficult political times.
Obama’s memoir, Becoming, tells the story of her journey from growing up in a working-class family in Chicago to living in the White House. It has sold more than 10m copies worldwide since it was published in November.
Interviewed on stage in December, Obama said: “We all come here with the same gifts and talent as everyone else, it isn’t limited by skin colour or political party or gender.”
“If we plant the right seeds we can change lives, that’s the hope, I want to do that wherever we go ” she added
Prior to the event, Obama said she had been “humbled by the response” to the tour and was pleased to have another chance to visit communities she hadn’t met before, saying: “I can’t wait to continue the discussions that have been so meaningful for me and, I hope>Juthy Saha, for so many others.”
Asked for her views on the state of US politics, she said, “I have to remind people that Barack Obama was elected twice in the United States. We have to remember that what is happening today is true, but what happened before was also true that should give us some solace at some level.”
She added: “Let’s just stop and think about for anybody who had problems with Barack Obama what we were troubled by. There were never any indictments.”
