Despite a cliffhanger ending that was clear setup for season 3, Netflix has cancelled the Marvel superhero drama Iron Fist and the reason is still not disclosed.
Over the weekend, Netflix shocked Marvel fans by announcing that they’d canceled Iron Fist – just over a month after the release of the show’s second season.
“Marvel’s Iron Fist will not return for a third season on Netflix,” Marvel and Netflix announced in a joint statement.
“Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is proud of the series and grateful for all of the hard work from our incredible cast, crew and showrunners. We’re thankful to the fans who have watched these two seasons, and for the partnership we’ve shared on this series. While the series on Netflix has ended, the immortal Iron Fist will live on”, the statement concluded.
Iron Fist is one of several in a joint Marvel/Netflix shared universe, set alongside Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and The Punisher. It follows billionaire Danny Rand (Finn Jones), who reappears after vanishing fifteen years ago, who trained as a monk to become a martial arts master known as the Immortal Iron Fist.
Though Season 2 ended on such a clear cliffhanger with Colleen being the new Iron Fist and Danny upgrading his powers to shoot Iron Fist Golden Guns, it seems like the writers were assuming season 3 was an inevitability.
While the news of Iron Fist’s cancellation makes the possibility of a Defenders Season 2 unlikely, Jeoff Loeb, Marvel’s head of TV, did say that a second Netflix team-up series was simply “not in the plans right now, but you never know!”
