Love – Review

Genre: Romantic comedy-drama
Cast: Gillian Jacobs, Paul Rust, Claudia O’Doherty, Chris Witaske
Love is a Netflix original romantic comedy-drama series that made its debut in 2016. It was co-created by Judd Apatow, created by the married couple Lesley Arfin (who wrote for the first season of Girls) and Paul Rust, who also stars in the show with Gillian Jacobs as Gus and Mickey, respectively. This short and sweet series deserves a little more attention (the third and last season has recently been released).
Love follows a nerdy school teacher for students on film sets as he meets a girl who’s the complete opposite of him in every way. Realizing that they have a lot of in common, they create an unlikely bond.
At its start, both Mickey and Gus are in the middle of disintegrating relationships: Mickey with a drunken loser, Gus with a long-term partner who unexpectedly leaves him. The progression of Gus and Mickey’s story and how they learn to overcome each other’s issues is the most enjoyable aspect about this show.
Gus and Mickey are so human: they are afraid to admit their insecurities and mistakes. But the show is at its best in those rare moments when emotions erupt and they do get vulnerable, always focusing on the trivial moments in life. In fact, one remarkable thing is that Paul Rust’s interaction with Gillian Jacobs jumps over the screen and you can feel like you are watching a real-life friendship.
Filled with real-life circumstances, chemistry between actors, heart-warming moments and great acting, Love is a very fun and sometimes sad show, definitely worth watching for fans of comedy and drama.
