Hollywood star Kristen Stewart made a move in protest by ditching her heels and walking the photo line barefoot on Cannes Film Festival on Monday as the festival has a strict dress code including a rule that women wear heels.
The 29-years-old actress, who is a member of the film festival’s jury this year, posed for photographers wearing a silver minidress with long sleeves by Chanel and black Christian Louboutin heels at Monday’s premiere of Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman and then went barefoot on red carpet carrying her footwear.
The defiant move had some questioning if Stewart was making a statement against the film festival’s notoriously strict dress code, which includes a rule that women wear heels.
In 2015 a lot of women were reportedly turned away from the premiere of the movie Carol and told to come back wearing the right shoes.
A Cannes spokesperson told a reporter at the time that “Rules have not changed throughout the years and there is no specific mention about the height of the women’s heels as well as for men’s”.
“There’s definitely a distinct dress code, right?” Said the Twilight Star last year to a Hollywood reporter, “People get very upset if you don’t wear heels or whatever, I feel like you can’t ask people that any more – it’s a given. If you’re not asking guys to wear heels and a dress, you cannot ask me either”.
