British Labour Party politician Jess Phillips has quit the leadership battle after announcing that she is not the right person to ‘unite’ the party.
Phillips confirmed the news to her followers by posting on Twitter along with a video where she said: ‘Sending a message to everyone who has backed me, to all who have joined in and joined up – I promise that your voices will still be heard. We all have a role to play in changing our party and our country.’
She continued: “The Labour Party will need to select a candidate that can unite all parts of our movement – the union movement, the members and elected representatives. I have to be honest that at this time, that person isn’t me”.
To win from the unions she would have needed a minimum of two labour affiliates or at least 33 Constituency Labour Parties, which she couldn’t manage. So there was no chance for her to win the leadership battle.
Moreover, earlier she didn’t attend the hustings organised by the GMB union.
On the other hand, Lisa Nandy received a major boost hours later when GMB endorsed her for leader.
Following Phillips’ withdrawal, Nandy said: “I’m sorry to see Jess drop out. She has made waves, shown great friendship and I’ll miss her in this contest.”
