Jamie’s Italian WhatsOn UK Major family review

Jamie’s continues to be a very credible and popular option for diners everywhere. On arrival we were shown to our table by a warm and hospitable waiter. We were then introduced to the menu that continues to be comprehensive, in that there is something for everyone, as well as being very well thought out. Looking around the restaurant there is a great feel of space, airiness and colour. The chairs are turquoise, yellow and brown. Again the style is a very well designed interpretation on the post industrial modernist theme: Fresh, whilst managing to be comfortable and homely.
For the first course we chose the Crispy Squid at £6:75. The dish was served with fried chilli, garlic, parsley and house aioli for dripping. No problems here. The dish was delicious, well cooked, crispy and combined textures and a good balance of sweet and savoury. We also ordered Smoked Salmon Bruschetta for £5:25. This was comprised of Lowestoft hot smoked salmon, horse radish, ricotta, bronze fennel and lemon. This was a fresh lively invigorating dish. The serving was generous whilst being the right size helping to lead the way to our mains.
For our mains we ordered the Famous Prawn Linguine for £14:55. The dish was a beautifully combined offering of garlicky prawns, Scottish Langoustine tails with tomatoes, fennel, saffron, fresh chilli and rocket. Delicious. With the flavours of the prawns and tails brought out by the fennel and saffron. We also ordered the Oxtail Lasagne for £13:95. A wonderful combination of herby 12 hour slow cooked Oxtail and Chianti ragu layered with pasta, bechamel, mozzarella and Parmesan. This is a hearty, rustic and warming choice that did not disappoint. We then chose the Octopus Ravioli for £14:55. Octopus and squid-ink pasta parcels in a rich shellfish and tomato sauce, topped with hand picked cornish crab. The flavours together created a rich yet not overpowering dish that was impossible to fault.
For dessert we opted for the desserts from the Evening Menu. Normally the menu could be chosen with the two course or the three course offering for £14:95 or £17:95 respectively. We chose the following desserts from the menu: Clotted Cream Panna Cotta. A combination of raspberry compote, smashed meringue and fresh mint. This was a delicious and simple end to the evening. Creamy textures with the crunch from the meringue, then the sweet from the compote was perfect. The mint served to lift things a little. We also elected for the Affogato dessert. This dessert was comprised of vanilla ice cream with a shot of piping hot espresso. The sweet and bitter working beautifully together.
General Manager Liz Burton has created a wonderful dining experience for all. The food was expertly conceived and delivered. The team of staff waiters, managers and chefs work with great professionalism and aplomb. Jamie’s continues to be one of our very favourite restaurants in Birmingham and for good reason too. There is an extensive children’s menu and the dining atrium allows for small groups, parties or couples. Superb all around.
