At least 29 people were killed and 70 others wounded in an attack on a military parade in Iran’s southwestern city of Ahvaz on Saturday. Iran summons UK, Dutch and Danish over the attack.
The Dutch and Danish ambassadors and the British charge d’affaires were “informed of Iran’s strong protests over their respective countries’ hosting of some members of the terrorist group” which carried out the attack, official news agency IRNA said.
On Sunday Iran called on Denmark and the Netherlands to extradite the attack’s “perpetrators and their accomplices” to stand trial in the Middle Eastern country, citing foreign ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi.
Islamic State and an Arab nationalist separatist group, called the Patriotic Arab Democratic Movement in Ahwaz, both claimed responsibility for the attack.
Sunday, ISIS-affiliated Amaq News Agency began circulating a video that claimed to show three of the four assailants accused of carrying out the attack. But none of the men in the video ever said they were working on behalf of ISIS.
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif also blamed “a foreign regime” backed by the United States for Saturday’s attack.
Regional governments condemned the attack and offered their condolences, including Hamas, Qatar and a number of Saudi Arabia’s reginal allies such as Kuwait, Oman and Egypt. Saudi Arabia was missing from the list of customary diplomatic condolences.
“We are with you with all the power we have” to stand against these terrorist acts, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said in a cable to Rouhani, the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency reported. “We hope that the backers, financers and proponents of terrorism will understand that this danger threatens mankind as a whole.”
