I, Tonya

Director: Craig Gillespie
Cast: Margot Robbie, Sebastian Stan, Allison Janney
This based-on-a-true-story film explores the toxic relationship between competitive ice skater Tonya Harding and her mother and ex-husband. Her mother was not always the most loving person but she pushed her to be the very best. Her husband was abusive. The plot also follows her path towards Olympic glory and the events that led up to her being banned from competitive ice skating for the rest of her life.
Allison Janney has received numerous awards for her turn as Tonya Harding’s mother LaVona. Working with a brief clip of an interview given by LaVona she builds an incredibly hateful mother who pushes her daughter to the brink. Margot Robbie has finally found a role in which she can truly shine. Her portrayal of Tonya Harding is completely credible and it makes you wonder how Frances McDormand got away with winning all the best leading actress awards.
Despite the seriousness of events, ‘I, Tonya’ makes for a fun film. The editing is remarkable – using interviews, as well as narrative and side comments by the characters within the scenes. ‘I, Tonya’ is a very enjoyable movie that will have you laughing, feeling sorry for the characters and will make your jaw drop more than once.
