On paper if I pitched this to you I think you can expect trouble – Shia LeBeouf directing, writing and starring in a film about a child actor’s life growing up in the spotlight. Surprisingly Honey Boy, the somewhat autobiographical tells an interesting and cathartic story without appearing self-indulgent or unapologetic. With LeBeouf not playing the main role but the titular child actor’s father, he helps audiences understand the huge amounts of pressure that can affect child stars and looks at how this can affect them growing up in and interesting way. With how intense Lebeouf has been in the past he has shown clear restraint and care on handling the subject material this time around, which makes for an engaging and interesting story.
