With overwhelming Covid admissions around the UK hospitals, Health Unions are protesting about the threat of burnout NHS staff, poor pays, and child poverty rates. Anika Khan reports.
Around every thirty seconds, the UK is seeing a new Covid-29 patient admitted to the hospitals. This has put the NHS in a precarious position with hospitals and staff under extreme pressure. 14 Health Unions have come forward to support the NHS and demand the PM for a pay rise for the staff.
There has also been a chronic shortage of nurses and midwives. Currently, there are more than ten thousand Nurse vacancies in the NHS. Unison and Royal’s college have spoken about how it is essential to raise pay to tackle the shortage of staff.
Former PM David Cameron claimed that “Covid-19 was the rainy day” that Britain has been saving for decades. This savings he claims has put Britain in a better position to tackle the coronavirus crisis. This was a blatant lie. There has been nothing but spending cuts which has permanently put the NHS into a crisis even before the Pandemic began. Local authorities were already starving with the shortage of resources, funding, and support.
The Tories’ systematic attack on Labour rights over the years have left millions without resources and security. It has left the country paralyzed especially after the pandemic hit the nation. The country’s health sector is collapsing. It is high time that the government listens to the demands to tackle the crisis.
The public is demanding a new deal_ higher pay across the public sector, actions to create sustainable jobs, and investment in the development of public services.
