Girl in Red surprises fans with the release of ‘Rue’ from her pending debut album.
The Norwegian-singer, Marie Ulven released a video on Instagram teasing fans ahead of the release of the track on Wednesday.
About the single Ulven said: “I wrote this song for my loved ones who are affected by my mental health. I will always try my best to get better for them, and I am forever grateful for their presence in my life.”
With influences from HBO’s Euphoria, Marie wrote the song inspired by the parallels between herself and the character Rue from the hit tv series.
The inspiration for the song’s melody came about when Marie was in a guitar shop in Time Square and came across its chord progression.
The track has a melancholic feel to it, similar to Midnight Love released last year and gives fans a taste of her named debut album.
Marie has an honest openness to her songwriting and production, which is why the singer has gained such success.
Talking about her queerness and mental health, which created a supportive fanbase for the singer she says: “A lot of people don’t know about mental health. People lack knowledge and don’t understand that your mental health isn’t necessarily who you are. You can be depressed but that doesn’t mean you don’t want to go outside or you don’t have feelings. To me it’s not taboo at all to talk about mental health. Everyone has mental health. I don’t see talking about sex as a taboo thing either.”
The enthusiastic drums bode well with the bleak music video for the single, where we see Marie in a different light, with a more emotional toll on her usual romantic indie style.
