Review: The Red Lion, West Bromwich

The choice for a mixed grill or curry house in the Midlands is huge, but there is a hidden gem – The Red Lion in West Bromwich.
This is a family owned pub, run by the Purewal family since 1997. The pub is well-known, but recently it’s gone through a noticeable transformation and you are instantly drawn to the new décor and the various lions heads throughout the pub. From matt effect lions on the glass separation markers to the lions’ heads on the walls, there is no mistaking where you are.
The Red Lion did not fail to amaze all of us with our meals, including a mixed grill, chilli chips and lamb curry with two different naans (plain and a very nice cheesy one that we are talking about even now on a Tuesday morning!)

I have been to all of the well-known spots for mixed grills in the West Midlands and would have no reservations in recommending The Red Lion to friends and family. The service was second to none and we all left with a lasting impression.
It is a family orientated pub, which is now investing in a new children’s play area with a retractable roof. This makes it perfect as a family day/night out. The owners are clearly making a conscious choice with the future of the pub – the play area is just further evidence of them thinking ahead to their successful future.
For me finding a mixed grill location that I can take the family to is always a struggle and taking a 3 and 6-year-old to a pub is usually more hassle than it’s worth. That said, if the interior, service and feel of the pub is anything to go by I would recommend the original, one and only, Red Lion in West Bromwich.
