EU to Make All Plastic Recyclable or Reusable by 2030

The EU has announced the latest of their environmental goals. Its target is that by 2030 all plastic should be reusable or recyclable.
The EU is very concerned by the amount of plastic waste generated by single use plastic-based products such as drinking straws, disposable coffee cups, takeaways container and cutlery, as well as the single use carrier bags.
There is an increasing amount of plastic waste in our oceans. In order to achieve this goal and prove its commitment to becoming more environmentally friendly, the EU is investing £310 m in research on how to tackle the issue.
People are mostly unaware of the consequences of their use of single use plastic-based products and don’t often give much thought as to what happens to the waste they generate. Some of these plastic products take close to no time to be made, a used briefly and then take centuries to disappear.
One of the measures that the EU is considering to tackle the issue is taxing the use of single use plastic products. This would increase the cost of certain things and would possibly put the consumer of buying them.
The EU also wants to invest in making clearer labels for all products to inform the consumer of what can and cannot be recycled. The ultimate goal is to ensure that at least 55% of all plastic is recyclable by 2030.
Investment in public drinking fountains and access to tap water will hopefully mean a reduction in the use of plastic drinking bottles.
The EU is looking to guide member states on how to reduce the use of plastic, how to make their citizens aware of the impact of their use of single use plastic products on the environment and on how to keep better track on the levels of waste dumped into bodies of water.
