England beat Colombia 4-3 on penalties in a successive shootout defeats at major tournaments and book a quarter-final clash against Sweden at the World Cup.
After a nervy extra time period, England kept their cool to win their first ever World Cup penalty shootout and beat Colombia on 4-3 which confirms their place further.
Eric Dier put away the final spot kick to secure victory, having been given the opportunity to put the Three Lions into the quarter-finals after Jordan Pickford saved a shot from Carlos Bacca.
“To get knocked down at the end like we did with that goal in extra time, you know, it’s difficult to come back from that. But we did,” Dier said.
Kane, Marcus Rashford and Kieran Trippier all found the net in the shootout but Jordan Henderson saw his saved by David Ospina.
Manager Gareth Southgate celebrated with his staff while his players mobbed the heroes Pickford and Dier after their first win at the knockout stage of major tournament since 2006 where fans are excited to plot their route through the latter stages.
It was the first time Colombia had been involved in a World Cup shootout and they took first blood when Jordan Henderson missed his spot kick – but for once fortune smiled on England.
