Emma

Cast: Anya Taylor-Joy, Johnny Flynn, Josh O’Connor, Bill Nighy and more

Austen’s satire of English society is a joy to read as well as behold on screen and Emma doesn’t disappoint. The latest adaption shows Anya Taylor-Joy as the titular character, a queen bee of the early 19th century high society. Spoiled and without much to do, Emma spends her time matchmaking her less fortunate friends to disastrous results. Directed by Autumn de Wilde, the film takes on a similar vibe to 80s coming-of-age movies, which somewhat removes the high-brow aspect of Austen’s prose and gives the film a relatable comedic effect. It’s the perfect film to curl up with some popcorn during this quarantine.
