Silky smooth vocals with a little touch of huskiness will draw comparisons with Sade but Ella Mai is a singer that’s very firmly set in modern times. This album is a great showcase for her undoubted talents and also benefits from some lovely warm production. The only thing that allows it to go a little flat is that some of the songs are almost indistinguishable from one another. You can revel in being serenaded by Mai but the record could just do with being a tad more memorable for other reasons too. One killer track could see Ella Mai become a superstar, it’s not on this record but the future is still bright.
