A new study shows that air pollution reduces the level of intelligence and even can cause serious diseases such as dementia. Over the last four years, scientists in China examined people’s significant decline in cognitive performance.
Study shows that the high levels of toxic air ‘is equivalent to having lost a year of education’, not just a person’s physical health.
The research also revealed that a shockingly 92% of the Chinese population were breathing unsafe air, moreover resulting in 6.5 million deaths per year, being 11.6% of all global deaths.
Furthermore, a latest study indicated that children over the age of 10 had worse performance when answering maths and language questions. There were also signs that the air pollution affected more men than women, the impact being stronger the older the person is.
“The damage on the ageing brain by air pollution likely imposes substantial health and economic costs, considering that cognitive functioning is critical for the elderly for both running daily errands and making high-stake decisions”, the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences stated.
