The Italian city of Genoa has reportedly had one of its bridges collapse on Tuesday. The “Ponte Morandi” (Morandi Bridge), named after its architect, Riccardo Morandi, had been built between 1963 and 1967 and was officially in usage on 4 September 1967.
The bridge has been described as having a “beautiful design” by senior lecturer in structural engineering from the University of Exeter, Dr Maria Rosaria Marsico, emphasising on the particular style of concrete bridges designed by Morandi in the sixties.
Situated on the A10 motorway in Genoa, Italy, the Morandi Bridge has undergone several repairs since the 1970s, which puts in question the reason why it might have collapsed into consideration, simply whether the bridge could hold the traffic going through it. It connects Genoa with other beaches in eastern Liguria into France and the possible crash could be due to the reason it might be structurally unstable.
There have been 37 deaths and 15 injured people so far, but police warn that the fatalities may continue to rise as there were at least 30 cars and 3 heavy vehicles where the collapse happened. Prosecutors have said an investigation has been opened but no targets have been identified yet, but hundreds of rescue workers are putting their efforts into searching for other possible survivors.
