Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard are both such forces to be reckoned with, it’s no surprise that when they combine together their skills the final result is amazing. Stop me if you’ve heard this one before, but it revolves around five teens that go to spend the weekend at an isolated cabin in the middle of nowhere. I’ll say no more at the risk of spoiling it, but this film deliberately leans into the clichés you expect and heavily will subvert your expectations at every possible turn. Fans of the horror genre will find so much to enjoy here, in an experience that isn’t particularly scary at every turn, but it an open love letter to the horror genre that has a surprising depth, and quite unlike anything you’ll see for a while.
