England’s allrounder cricketer Ben Stokes named as the BBC Sports Personality of the Year at the annual awards ceremony in Aberdeen on Sunday.
The 28-year-old got on the top by defeating other shortlisted sports personalities including the six-time Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton, the world champion sprinter Dina Asher-Smith, footballer Raheem Sterling, the Wales rugby captain Alun Wyn Jones and the world champion heptathlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson.
Stokes’ Individual world class performance in the ICC World Cup 2019 final and in the Ashes test, made him to grab public attention and win the award.
Stokes said, “It’s an individual award but it’s a team sport. The best thing is you get to share big moments with teammates and back-room staff. They make moments like this summer possible. Two years ago, was a tough time for me in my life and I had so many people help me through that. I wouldn’t be up here without you, so thanks.”
“That moment at Lords when we won the World Cup was a childhood dream. When you’re out there as a batsman, I just try to envisage myself as a boy in a bubble. Anything outside of that, I’ll try not to let it in. I just look at what I’ve got to do with the bat in hand,” added stokes.
England one day squad captain Eoin Morgan also praised on Ben Stokes achievement saying “There was probably an expectation between us [of Ben] winning the big award. But to scoop the other two on top of it in what was a big year for sport … It’s fantastic to see that cricket is at the forefront of everybody’s mind. It was incredible to be part of, we travelled up and down the country witnessing it first hand, just the incredible caring nature and the feelgood factor around the sport. For me that means a huge amount.”
