Author: John Carreyrou
This is a nonfiction book by journalist John Carreyrou. It covers the rise and fall of the firm Theranos.
In 2014, Theranos builder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was broadly seen as the female Steve Jobs: a brilliant Stanford dropout whose startup “unicorn” vowed to reform the medical industry with an equipment that would help to taste blood significantly faster and easier. Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at least $9 billion, putting Holmes’s worth at an estimated $4.7 billion. Only the problem was that the technology didn’t work.
An engrossing story of the largest corporate fraud since Enron, a story of aspiration and arrogance set within the bold promises of Silicon Valley.
