Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe

Author: Benjamin Alire Saenz
Set in the 80s in the heat of El Paso, Texas, this story sees two boys set out to discover the world and themselves, and they do so beautifully. We begin by following Aristotle to the swimming pool, a place he cannot enjoy until he meets Dante. As he teaches him Ari to swim, they become friends quickly and intensely, continuing to learn from each other throughout the entirety of the novel.
Through Aristotle’s voice, Saenz writes poetically and heartbreakingly, the story flows elegantly and the reader is pulled in as if they had known Ari and Dante their entire lives. The love story that blossoms steps on the edge of cliche but Saenz brings a beautiful sense of honesty to every page. A perfect follow up to Call Me By Your Name by Andre Aciman, the movie adaption of which just one an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.
