A horrendous crash killed 20 people in an accident involving a limousine at a popular tourist spot in upstate New York, authorities said on Sunday.
Two vehicles were involved in the crash shortly before 2 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of State Route 30 and State Route 30A in Schoharie, police said.
Local officials told the Times Union of Albany that a limo speeding down a hill crashed into bystanders at the Apple Barrel Country Store, a busy stop for tourists on fall foliage trips which is at that intersection.
State police say the limousine failed to stop at an intersection and plowed into an unoccupied SUV in a parking lot across from the intersection.
An aunt of one of the victims said a recently-wed couple were among those killed. Valerie Abeling identified the two victims as Erin Vertucci, 34, and Shane McGowan, 30. Abeling said of the wider family: “Our lives have been changed forever.”
17 of the victims were in the limo, one was driver and two were pedestrians. Debris was scatted throughout the area of the crash.
