Thousands of Bangladeshi students clashed with police at country’s top university in Dhaka while protesting country’s job quotas which left at least injuring 100 people.
Police fired rubber bullets and tear gas at student protest at university of Dhaka on Sunday April 8, while protesters threw rocks at police and torched two cars. The demonstrations carried into the early hour of Monday, a reporter says at least 100 people were injured by the time it was over.
Considering it as one of the biggest protests by students who were protesting job Quotas imposed by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, it turns country’s top university into battleground.
Organizers in Dhaka said they were holding peaceful protests when police started firing tear gas and rubber bullets, used batons and water cannon to clear a central square. As violence spread across the campus, thousands of male and female students launched into pitched battles with police.
The quotas reserve 56 percent of civil service jobs for veteran’s families and minorities which leaves most university graduates to fight for only 44 per cent of the jobs.
“We won’t leave the streets unless our demands are met. This is all about dignity. We are not afraid of bullets,” said Abdullah Bhuiyan, a 22-year-old English student.
