2018 is a historical year. It marks 100 years since the 1918 Representation of the People Act gave some women the right to vote, and 90 years since the 1928 Equal Franchise Act made everyone over the age of 21 able to vote.
To celebrate the achievements of women, a wide range of events (art and photography exhibitions, debates and talks) will be hosted all across East London.
Among the events, there will be a panel discussion on the topic of how to achieve equal representation for women in Parliament – Women in Parliament: 100 Years On Panel Discussion at the Bishopsgate Institute.
The side of the Lord Morpeth pub in Bow will become house to a mural depicting and honouring the selfless activism of Sylvia Pankhurst and the ladies of the East London Federation of Suffragettes.
The Museum of London will also be putting together an exhibition on the women’s suffrage movement.
There will be many more events to mark this 100th anniversary. A series of exhibitions and discussions on the universal suffrage campaign and the lives of women who dedicated their lives to the advancement of women’s rights will take over the city.
