Hodaka runs away from home in the summer of his freshman year of high school and meets Hina, a waitress at a restaurant. Hina gives Hodaka a free burger and he discovers that Hina can manipulate the weather with a prayer. The two strike up a friendship and start a business of weather control for money. Director Makoto Shinkai beautifully tells a story of first love and innocence with natural disaster a looming presence in the story. The juxtaposition between nature and young love is a common theme in Shinkai’s work, his first being the highly successful ‘Your Name’.
