A Bangladeshi opposition leader has been sentenced to five years in prison on charges of corruption after a court ruled her guilty for stealing food out of orphans’ mouths.
The court in Dhaka found the former prime minister Khaleda Zia guilty of embezzling money meant for an orphanage with a charge she had consistently dismissed as politically motivated.
Details suggested that Zia was convicted of embezzling £180,000 in donations that were supposed to go to an orphanage trust, which had actually been formed when she first took the position as PM in the year of 1991.
The 72-year-old leader was immediately taken to a special jail in the old part of the city where she must remain until her lawyers file an appeal.
“This is unbelievable,” commented Defence Laywer Mahbubuddin Khokan. “I am confident she will come out of jail.”
