US carried out airstrikes against Iran-backed militia in Syria

The US carried out an airstrike in Syria against a structure belonging to what it said were Iran-backed militia, two officials said. It was also the first military action undertaken by the Biden administration.

The United States move came after an attack nearly two weeks ago on the main military base inside the airport in Erbil, which killed one foreign civilian contractor and wounded at least nine others, including an American soldier.

“At President Biden’s direction, US military forces earlier this evening conducted airstrikes against infrastructure utilized by Iranian-backed militant groups in eastern Syria,” spokesman John Kirby in a statement.

“We have stated before that we will hold Iran responsible for the actions of its proxies that attack Americans,” State Department spokesman Ned Price said on Monday, noting that “many of these attacks have used Iranian made, Iranian supplied weapons.”

Iran Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh denied any ties to the February 15 attack in Erbil and Iran has not claimed responsibility for any of the other strikes.
