With the Universities opening this month, experts are worried that these educational institutions can become the next breeding grounds for COVID-19 to spread. Anika Khan Reports.
According to new scientific records, students who are already infected but have not shown any symptoms can carry the disease to their campuses. They can spread the disease around the campus and to their peers. These infected students can then further spread the virus when they go back to their homes and communities.
The Scientific Advisory Group on Emergencies has reported on Friday that there are higher chances of a COVID outbreak once the students return to their communities during the Christmas and New Year break.
There are considerable international links in this scenario that is being overlooked by the authorities. It is difficult to detect COVID-19 in an early stage amongst young people as they rarely develop any symptoms. However, the disease when passed to an elderly can become severely terminal for the later.
The University and College Union (UCU) in the UK have asked the government to consider the outcomes predicted by these reports seriously. The general secretary of UCU, Jo Grady, has urged to rethink the decisions of reopening the Educational institutions and hoping that things will go just go back to normal. Because there is no way to go back to how things were.
Covid-19 is here to stay and we as pretty much need to prepare ourselves to live with it. What is troublesome about all this is that both the government and the University authorities do not seem to well prepared for what is to come and to handle these changes.
