The United States vs Billie Holiday is set to release on 26th February, on Hulu. The film explores the struggle of jazz legend Billie Holiday, also known as Lady Day. The climax begins when the singer performs “Strange Fruit,” condemning the U.S. history of lynching Black people.

The movie is directed by Lee Daniels. Andra Day is portraying the lead character of the iconic singer. It also features Natasha Lyonne, Garrett Hedlund, Trevante Rhodes, and more.

The film is inspired by Johann Hari’s book “Chasing the Scream: The First and Last Days of the War on Drugs.”

The trailer shows Holiday’s audiences are celebrating her success but also provoking rage against her because of the protest song ‘Strange Fruit’.

“Hulu releasing this film [in the US] and giving it a platform to be seen nationwide is a blessing, because as recent events reveal, our country has much work to do in fulfilling its promise of a more perfect union,” said Daniels.

Daniels aims to explore the tragic events of Holiday’s life that led to her demise through the film. She died on July 17, 1959, at the age of 44 at the hospital. She died of heart failure caused by cirrhosis of the liver.
