UK’s Home Secretary, Priti Patel has met serious backlashes for her plan to ship asylum seekers to a volcanic island 4,000 miles from Britain.
Human rights organizations and refugee charities have come forward condemning this plan as being completely ‘ludicrous’ and ‘inhumane’.
Priti Patel revealed her plans to build an asylum center on Ascension Island which is 4,000 miles from the British coasts right in the Atlantic Ocean. Her plan was dropped in its initial state by the Foreign Office.
Human rights activists and REFUGEE charities took over the streets protesting and demanding the resignation of the Home Secretary.
The spokesperson of the Joint Council for the Welfare Immigrants said that they have been demanding a safe and simple way for asylum seekers to gain protection in the UK for many years. Unfortunately, the home minister interpreted their demands to open up a prison for these people. He said,
“ The proposal was so ridiculous that it’s almost laughable”.
REFUGEE charities chief executive, Stephen Hale also expressed how deeply troubling it was for the Home minister to even consider this inhuman plan as a serious solution to a humanitarian crisis.
The idea was initially taken from Australia who has built offshore detention centers to deal with illegal immigration since the 80s.
Labour Leader Sir Keir Starmer branded the plan to be ridiculous and addresses it as a display of the incompetence of the current government.
