Over the course of the weekend, Donald Trump has campaigned across seven swing states in an effort to defy the voting polls. He plans on declaring victory before the official declaration on Tuesday if it looks like he is ahead. Anika Khan reports.
Numerous sources have reported Trump’s plan to walk up to a podium on election night and declare that he has won. However, Trump denied these stories but confirmed that he will try to shut down vote counting as soon as the polls close on Tuesday.
Although vote counting’s after Election Day have been a feature of US elections, Trumps campaigner have claimed that this to be evidence of voter fraud. In a statement he said, “I don’t think it’s fair that we have to wait for a long period of time after the election.”
Due to the ongoing pandemic, early and mail-in voting’s having reached unprecedented levels and has fueled expectations of record turnouts this year. However, many fear that some states will take a longer time to count their ballot boxes.
Presidential candidate Joe Biden commented that Trump will not be stealing the election this time. In a drive-in rally in Philadelphia Biden said, “To beat the virus we’ve first got to beat Donald Trump.”
Joe Biden said, “He’s the virus.”
