Right after opening up yesterday, the Trade Union Congress has worked up a new task plan to prevent mass unemployment. They are now urging the government of England to look into these demands.
The government has taken the decision to end the Job Retention Scheme and Self-Employed Income Support Scheme next month. The schemes helped to protect jobs during this global pandemic. General Secretary of TUC, O’ Grady condemned the government to extend these schemes as the COVID- cases are surging high in the UK again.
Not to mention the loopholes in the schemes that affected individual workers and their families. Millions of People have suffered from a serious hit in their income. Unemployment has managed to disrupt families and as well as communities. Millions of people have applied to credit and are drowning in debts.
Big companies have announced job cuts by the thousands over the last few months. Smaller companies have also been downsizing and in some cases gone bankrupt.
In return for securing their jobs, firms have taken this opportunity to drive down wages. The people who have managed to keep the wheel turning are the ones with the least hourly wages, employed on insecure terms. All this needs to be put an end to.
TUC demands new deals to stop the immiseration of the workforce. Downward pressure on pay and sacking cannot be the only options left. They are working on how to mobilize their demands and collectively drive up wages with the help of the public, politicians, industrials, and regional trade councils.
