What Misa Sugiura accomplishes through this novel is capturing the difference between two generations who have grown up in vastly different socio-economic conditions. The coming of age novel introduces the protagonist to an unexpected passion after striking out with her family’s high expectations. CJ is at odds with her mother’s ambitious nature and discovers a hidden talent while helping out in a family owned flower shop. The novel deftly deals with racism, community, and the impossible standards placed on minorities to earn a place in mainstream society.
Sugiura masterfully deals with sensitive racial and societal issues through a theme of flowers. It is a wonderful story about finding your identity and purpose in the world despite the burdens of age-old traditions and discrimination.
