Theresa May Returns to Immigration Plan that Prioritizes Skilled Workers

Theresa May’s cabinet agreed a post-Brexit visa system based on the skills and wealth of migrants – but with no preferential access for EU nationals.
Downing Street expects the migration policy will appeal to party members concerned about May’s leadership and the Brexit negotiations, which last week appeared to have reached an impasse at Salzburg when EU leaders declared her Chequers proposals would not work.
Ministers backed a plan put forward by Sajid Javid, the home secretary, which is now expected to be among the key announcements at next week’s Conservative Party conference.
The plan has major implications for the Brexit negotiations, as special access to Britain can now no longer be able to traded away for a better trade deal with Brussels now that Cabinet has signed it off.
Territories which strike a free trade deal with the UK, including the EU, will be given enhanced access to the British labour market, but later in the future the United States, Canada, or some other countrues will be included.
Ministers have been told by the premier that there was ‘no future relationship that will prevent a hard border between Ireland and Northern Ireland, maintain the constitutional integrity of the UK and respect the referendum result that does not include frictionless trade’, according to the spokeswoman.
‘The PM said that, as it stands, the Government’s White Paper is the only plan on the table which achieves this and she remains confident of securing a deal with the EU,’ the spokeswoman said.
