Nearly a third of the 316, 264 voter registration applications in the past 2 days have been submitted by those under the age of 25.
Young voters hurried to submit 45,000 applications on Tuesday after Parliament agreed to holding a general election on 12 December, reaching a figure just shy of 60,000 the following evening. This is a substantial increase from the two days prior; when applications barely reached 20,000.
Altogether the voter registrations received were the highest and second-highest submitted on any day of 2019.
Despite these high figures, Willie Sullivan, senior director at the Electoral Reform Society, said “There’s a long way to go before we close the registration gap.”
Figures show that 9.4 million people are still missing from the electoral roll.
