The nominees in all 24 categories for the 2018 Academy Awards were announced earlier today. As was expected, Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water seems to remain the favourite leading the pack of nominees with 13 nominations.
Girls Trip star Tiffany Haddish and British actor/director Andy Serkis were the ones in charge of the announcement. Favourites Three Billboards, Dunkirk and Lady Bird are all among the nominated.
Frances McDormand, Gary Oldman and Sam Rockwell are all nominated in the acting categories they have already been victorious in at other awards ceremonies this season. They are one step closer to achieving the most coveted accolade of them all.
Movie-goers will be appeased by the Best Director nominations for both Greta Gerwig for Lady Bird and Jordan Peele for his work on Get Out. Fans have been protesting the lack of recognition for the directors of two of the most popular films last year. The lack of female directors in the category has also been highlighted by protestors.
Fans will also be pleased to see newcomer Daniel Kaluuya nominated for Leading Actor for his portrayal of a black boyfriend meeting his white girlfriend’s parents for the first time in horror/comedy Get Out.
Dunkirk and Blade Runner 2049 have both been recognised in the technical categories. Baby Driver has also received nods in the Sound Mixing, Sound Editing and Film Editing. The multi-award winning costume designer Jacqueline Durran has been nominated twice in the Costume Design category for her work on Darkest Hour and Beauty & The Beast.
The 90th edition of the Oscars will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel after his success as host of last year’s ceremony. The awards will be handed out on 4 March.
