The Last Morrell drops captivating debut EP ‘Sarcasm’

Our music editor Adam Humphries reports why you should listen to Last Morrell’s new captivating debut album, Sarcasm.

Sarcasm, the new album by Yorkshire-based artist, James Smithells, better known by his stage name, The Last Morrell. The album both opens up on a great track and finishes the same way. As a music fan, I have not heard a voice this good since James Morrison, and yes that’s how good he is. It may only be four tracks long but the entire album takes you on a musical journey.

The Party; utterly soft, melodic and voice that has that strange yet beautiful haunting sound to it. In some ways almost makes you shudder a little it’s that good. You get a great introduction to James’s singing ability here.

Sometimes; continuing with a soulful tone, the song has a somewhat sombre tone to it but suddenly picks up a bit with upbeat guitar riffs towards the end. Then eventually finishes on a smooth, soulful note. In a way it finishes as it began.

Picking at Stiches; like with the last track, begins in a sombre feel, both moody and atmospheric but also has some emotion in it as well. It’s after a minute and 47 seconds it changes the tempo via guitar riffs before returning to a smooth, soulful vocal harmony at the end.

Sunset; the last song of the EP and if I’m going to be quite honest a good track to end on as well. For a track that is less than 3 minutes long it contains a fair amount, and as the listener you’re taken on a smooth musical journey.

Two further tracks for your listening pleasure are A Comedy with features Caitlyn Scarlet which is like milk and honey. Vocally, they just go together, and she is the vocal equivalent to Paloma Faith and is an absolute joy to listen to and Caitlyn and James compliment each other together. Another Boy; as yet another song that is filled with jazz, pianos, superb vocals

Overall, this is one album that so far, I find hard to fault as it’s that good. Filled to the brim with easy listening jazz beats, piano sounds and great vocal by James Smithells.
