The Good Immigrant USA, ed. by Nikesh Shukla and Chimene Suleyman

The Good Immigrant USA
Edited by: Nikesh Shukla and Chimene Suleyman
The first edition of The Good Immigrant, a collection of essays, was published in 2016, featuring twenty-one writers who had been invited by Shukla and Suleyman to contribute their thoughts on the topics of race and immigration in the UK and to share their experiences.
The narrative around immigration, especially in recent years and with the current divisive environment, has been very negative, painting immigrants as “those people” who move to a different country to “steal our jobs.” The Good Immigrant sought to shed some light on the other side of the story and to highlight the contributions made by immigrants.
After the success of the UK edition of The Good Immigrant, Shukla and Suleyman decided that there were so many other points of view and experiences to be explored. And so The Good Immigrant USA came to be.
In this latest collection of essays, 26 first- or second-generation immigrants reflect on their lives and how their status as “immigrants”, as “others”, has affected the way they live.
Trump’s dream of a wall at the Mexican border, the Muslim travel ban, racism, cultural appropriation: all of these and other highly relevant topics are touched upon in this series of thought-provoking essays which could lead readers to question their views or to start conversations that could cause a shift in attitudes.
In a globalised and ever-shrinking world, the work being done by books like The Good Immigrant USA is incredibly important. Putting these stories out there and reading them will hopefully bring people closer together in an incrisingly divided America. The Good Immigrant is very timely!
