HBO has revealed Season 2 of The Deuce will premiere 9 September at 9pm on the premium cable network. Sky Atlantic, which broadcasts The Deuce in Britain, has yet to share a UK airdate but it could be soon after US transmission.
The date was announced via HBO’s official Twitter account which posted a photo of Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Eileen ‘Candy’ Merrell walking through the streets of New York City. The tweet was accompanied by the caption: “It’s 1978. Punk, disco and porn. The City never sleeps. THE DEUCE season two debuts Sept 9.”
James Franco, who starred in Season 1 as twin brothers Vincent and Frankie Martino, is missing from the first promo photo released — despite HBO’s previous confirmation that the actor would appear in Season 2.
The series averaged 5.6 million viewers across all platforms, including delayed viewing, during its first season. The drama also earned a Golden Globe nomination for leading lady Maggie Gyllenhaal, as well as a Writers Guild Award nod for New Series.
The show chronicles the rise of the porn culture in New York from the early 1970s through the mid-1980s, exploring the world of the sex trade. It follows a cast of barkeepers, prostitutes, pimps, police and nightlife denizens as they swirl through a world of sex, crime and violence.
While season one focused on the burgeoning industry, it was also an exploration of the drug epidemic in the city and the ensuing violence. Sex worker Candy was seen making a career for herself with the legalisation of pornography. Season two will carry on with these themes; her character is set to be featured more prominently.
