For almost forty-five years now, The Fureys have been regarded as one of the finest folk bands ever to emerge from the island of Ireland. Consisting originally of brothers Finbar, Eddie, George, and the late Paul, their music has been heard all over the world and continues to inspire and entertain a faithful following.
Today, Eddie and George keep the name of The Fureys alive and it was a great pleasure to see them when they visited the Assembly Rooms in Tamworth recently. Thanks are due, first of all, to Sadie, Adam, Vicky, and all the team whose friendly and efficient service in a variety of ways added much to the evening. It was a very enjoyable occasion and we were treated to wonderful songs, instrumentals, and stories, many of which were familiar and had us singing and clapping along. “The Green Fields of France,” ” I Will Love You,” “The Old Man,” “Red Rose Cafe” and many other Fureys favorites were the fare to keep us enthralled. Eddie and George are very ably accompanied by their musicians on accordion, banjo, and bass guitar and the whole sound is very pleasant to listen to.
After the concert, it was great to catch up with Eddie and George and to swap stories and anecdotes, many of which were connected to our mutual friends and acquaintances in the folk music scene. It was a superb evening and I would certainly recommend the Assembly Rooms as a venue with a good atmosphere and a fine setting for a variety of entertainment.
