Supergirl Season 4 Trailer Reveals New Transgender Superhero

The latest Supergirl trailer unveiled our first look at transgender actress Nicole Maines as Nia Nal, CatCo’s newest reporter who is destined become the superhero Dreamer — which would make her TV’s first transgender superhero.
Maines was a transgender activist who gained national attention for her battle against her Orono, Maine school district over her right to use the girls’ bathroom.
Dreamer is a long-running character in DC Comics canon, first appearing in the pages of Adventure Comics #317 in 1988. When season 4 was first announced, Warner Bros. described the CW’s take on the character as “a soulful young transgender woman with a fierce drive to protect others…Nia’s journey this season means fulfilling her destiny as the superhero Dreamer .”
“Fear — no matter how much we believe in ourselves, that never really goes away. I think, ‘I’m not afraid of anything,’ but then something chases me back down the rabbit hole,” Kara tells Maines in the trailer. “But once we catch ourselves, we have to jump right back out there.”
Released on The CW’s official YouTube channel, the new trailer does not reference any of what occurred in the previous season, focusing instead on a series of vignettes showcasing the new cast members.
Furthermore, the new promo also revealed a better look at Supergirl’s new suit and a brief shot of Smallville alum Sam Witwer, who will play Agent Liberty, the leader of the anti-alien group Children of Liberty.
Supergirl returns to The CW for its fourth season on 14 October. A UK air date will be revealed later in the year.
