Spain’s new Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez who was sworn to take the responsibility on Saturday, named his cabinet on Wednesday, with women holding the majority of ministerial posts of any administration in Europe.
The cabinet members holds a record 11 women members including in key posts such as deputy prime minister, finance minister and defense minister, and six male ministers which is the first time in the country’s history.
Among the 11 women is Carmen Calvo, Spain’s new deputy prime minister and equalities minister, responsible for gender equality. A former astronaut who will head up the science ministry and a journalist who will become culture and sports minister.
His cabinet choices reflected a pledge made during his campaign to choose Socialist, feminist, and pro-European individuals to serve in his government.
Sanchez said that his government would be “unmistakably committed to equality,” and would reflect the growing movement for gender equality in Spain spurred by a feminist strike on International Women’s Day earlier this year.
Sanchez described the country’s new cabinet as “pro-gender equality, cross-generational, open to the world but anchored in the European Union” and said it also would reflect the growing movement for gender equality in Spain spurred by a feminist strike on International Women’s Day earlier this year.
But as a minority government it will have a tough time governing Spain, relying as it will on the votes of far-left party Podemos as well as Basque and Catalan nationalist lawmakers who supported his no-confidence motion.
“All are highly qualified and bring a vocation for public service and reflect the best of Spain, the new cabinet is pro-gender equality, cross-generational, open to the world but anchored in the European Union” told Sanchez to the reporters on Wednesday.
