SOME GUYS HAVE ALL THE LUCK.

THE PALACE THEATRE, REDDITCH.
Our WhatsOn editor, Colin Mcllwaine has specially curated the review of the show he was witness of. Please read it and share it!

There are many “tribute acts” of varying quality around in today’s world and it is always interesting to see how much resemblance they bear to the artists/groups concerned, in terms of sound, look etc. It was with eager anticipation that I went to the Palace in Redditch to see Paul Metcalfe in “Some Guys Have All The Luck,” his musical based upon the life and work of Sir Rod Stewart. I had chatted to Paul in advance and found a lot of common ground and the musical had been endorsed by Rod’s own brother and sister. As soon as he walked on to the stage, I saw a striking resemblance and his singing voice sounded completely authentic.

For the next two hours plus, we were  taken on a musical journey through Rod’s career, from the blues influences of his early days (my personal favourite Rod era) right through to his more recent material and including all those familiar songs that had us singing, clapping and even, on our feet and dancing along. “The First Cut Is the Deepest,” “Maggie May,” “Sailing,” “You’re in my Heart,” “Young Turks” and many others, including the title song itself, gave us a broad perspective on a long and successful career. The musicianship of the backing group was also excellent, with guitar, bass, keyboards and drums adding to a great sound and all in all, a thoroughly enjoyable evening. The couple who were sitting beside me mentioned that they had seen Rod himself five times and that they had enjoyed this show every bit as much.

When all was finished, it was great to meet up with Paul and lead guitarist, Al in the local Wetherspoons and to share reminiscences about Rod’s songs and various aspects of the world of music. It was a great evening and well worth attending. For further information, please check out Paul’s website.
