Taking things back to basics is fraught with danger in a music business that thrives on the new and the fashionable. So America’s Child, a blues record needs to have something special about it to even register, and it does. Shemekia Copeland has the kind of power and soul that most other singers can only dream about.
Here she also has great material and clearly time very well spent in the studio. With production that is sympathetic to the music and music that is timeless this album nods at trending music like a parent with a child. It’s not just a timely reminder where much of our music came from, it’s a masterpiece in its own right.
