Selena Gomez opens up about Bipolar disorder

Selena Gomez recently opened up to Miley Cyrus about her mental health journey and shared that she had recently been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. By Tara Pilkington.

During the coronavirus lockdown in the US, singer Miley Cyrus has started an Instagram Live talk show called Bright Minded in which she invites famous guests to join her live-stream to talk about a range of important topics.

In a recent episode, she chatted with fellow Disney Channel alumni Selena Gomez who revealed that she had recently visited Massachusetts’s McLean Hospital, which is considered one of the best mental health facilities in the country. In the live-stream she said:

“I discussed that after years of going through a lot of different things, I realised that I was bipolar.”

She discussed how this realisation was a very seismic event for her and allowed her the ability to explore what this meant and to better understand herself.

Commonly characterised with a person who experiences shifts between high and low moods, typically referred to as mania and depression, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) describes bipolar disorder as “a mental illness that causes dramatic shifts in a person’s mood, energy and ability to think clearly.
