Sci-fi K-drama: The Silent Sea Review

The Silent Sea is about a team of scientists who are sent on a mission to retrieve samples from an abandoned outpost on the moon. They won’t say what those samples are, and they are shutting down the Balhae Space Station located on the Moon after this mission is over. The show is set in a future where there are no trees, no pets, no rain, and a planet without enough water to save all its people.

The series is based on Choi Hang-short Yong’s film The Sea of Tranquility, which he wrote in 2014. Choi Hang-Yong will also produce the series. On December 24, 2021, it aired on Netflix. This sci-fi series The Silent Sea has become the most-watched non-English series on the platform.

Cast

  • Bae Doona as Doctor Song Ji-an.
  • Gong Yoo as Han Yoon-jae.
  • Lee Joon as Lieutenant Ryoo Tae-seok.
  • Kim Sun-young as Dr. Hong Ga-Young.
  • Kim Si-A as Luna 073.
  • Lee Moo-saeng as Chief Gong Soo-hyuk.

The viewer is forced into a post-apocalyptic future in Choi Hang-film The Silent Sea, where the Earth’s resources are fast disappearing due to desertification. People are divided into social groups that determine their access to water. The wealthy and their associates enjoy the luxury of never having to worry about their supply, whereas the impoverished are forced to make do with less.

Dr. Song Jian has been chosen to play the famous astrobiologist. He is completely opposite to Captain Han Yun-Jae, played by Gong Yoo. Others in the crew are a doctor, the pilot, the co-pilot, an engineer, a design man, and two soldiers.

Soon after, the team discovers piles of bodies and strange radiation levels in the station’s corridors. This sets off a chain of events that adds a new layer of complexity and anxiety to the already risky mission.

The series presents a nail-bitingly intense scenario by flirting with the boundlessness of the unknown. The Silent Sea does an immaculate job depicting the horrors that only the unfamiliar can bring, all while taking place in the claustrophobic confines of the station’s dark, winding hallways. The uncharted terrain of the Moon and the abandoned space station create the perfect backdrops for the show’s bigger-picture abstrusities.

The Silent Sea is a subtle investigation of outer space as humanity’s last chance, shedding light on the extraordinary lengths to which the upper echelon will go to protect themselves and their dignity. This is a must-see due to excellent production and set design, as well as an idea that has been refined over a decade.
