Saturday Special: Interview with Lock-In’s lead guitarist Patrick

Our reporter Poppy Huggett is back for an exclusive interview with Lock-In’s lead guitarist Patrick.

Let’s revert back to the beginning of January when we caught up with frontman Benjy to discuss all things Lock-In and how they’ve been working through the lockdown.

Since then, Lock-In have exceeded expectations, gaining attention from listeners across the UK. From their hit single ‘Get Over It’ being played on Sky Sports Soccer AM to the continuous support from followers, Lock-In have continued to follow their musical career whilst remaining kind-hearted to their supporters

When asked how the band has been working since January, Patrick said: “Support from various music blogs and our followers helped to reach ‘Get Over It’ to more than 30k within a month”. He added: “We would truly like to thank everyone who’s streamed, shared and promoted us!”

Lock-In’s journey creating their latest and greatest music project named “Notebook” features two tremendous acoustic singles, ‘Someone I Used to Know’ & ‘The Train’. Both tracks radiate a smooth ambiance, undoubtedly perfect for a Sunday morning stroll.

When asked about the choice of songs for ‘Notebook’, Patrick said: “Someone I used to know was an older song we had, unlike The Train which is very new.” He added: “Someone I Used to Know was a no-brainer for us, and we had to make a big decision to feature The Train on the project… I’m glad we included it”

2020 saw the release of Lock-In’s epic alternative hits ‘Rosy Cheeks’ and ‘Teenager’. The release of an acoustic project demonstrates just how much music range circulates from Lock-In. Patrick commented on the decision to create an acoustic album: “We like to show followers and our industry that we don’t want to be restricted to releasing a certain style of song nor do we want to be pigeonholed into one genre”.

“Someone I used to know was quite challenge free, the challenging part was showing the boys this song with my own lyrics to it!” Patrick commented when asked if the band faced any challenges creating ‘Notebook’. He added: “The train was a string of ideas I penned on a train and it was hard to put them into your standard verses and choruses, but once the pre chorus was completed, it felt like the glue of the song”.

The lyrics behind both singles on the music project ‘Notebook’ are intimate and relatable, having an ability to revisit your past and connect with your emotions. When questioned what the two tracks meant to Patrick, he said: “I suppose my chosen way was writing songs about how I felt”. He added: “Having said that, any song we release is only complete when the listener finds their own personal truth and meaning in the lyrics”.

As we see the light towards the end of lockdown in the UK, Lock-In’s journey is just to begin. The band are set to perform at London’s legendary gastro pub The Water Rats and then have rousing plans to gig across the UK. Patrick added: “We hope to hit up the London circuit of venues at first, so gigging at Water Rats is a cracking way to start off!”
